Frequently asked questions

Just in case you’re wondering…

How will I get paid?

Good question. Straight to the point.

We work closely with a company called Wise who are an accountancy company that specialise in self-employed delivery drivers. They handle everything for you and you get paid each Friday for the work that you did the week before. They will do your expenses and annual accounts.

They can also get you an extra % on top of your earnings by setting up and managing a flat-rate VAT scheme for you which is basically free money!

Where will I be delivering?

We cover Plymouth, with a bit of Plympton thrown in. Things do wobble around a little bit but that’s our main patch.

The Amazon system that manages where our routes are will try it’s best to keep you in the same part of our area, so you build up local knowledge making it easier in future to find places.

How long are the routes?

Because Amazon has a lot of data regarding the amount of time it takes to deliver to each customer and drive to the next one they are able to create routes that last for 9 hours. The number of deliveries made within that 9 hours just depends on which customers you are delivering to and where they live.

Will I get a break?

Of course! We highly recommend that you take a 30 minute lunch break after around 5 hours of delivering to remain safe and alert on the road. It’s up to you when you actually take a break though. You can even split it up into smaller breaks if you prefer. All we ask is that you let us know when you have a break and have the van back within 10 hours. We don’t allow anyone to drive for more than 10 hours because we want everyone to be safe.

Can I take the van home?

In a word...no. The vans are kept overnight at the station in a secure compound so that they are always available for whoever is working. If the van went home with you it would be sitting on your drive when you had a day off and we wouldn’t be able to use it.

How old do I have to be?

Because of how our fleet insurance works you need to be at least 21 years old.

Does it matter if I have points on my licence?

Ideally, you’ll have 0 points on your licence but if you do have points on your licence we’ll look carefully at what the points are for.

Some points, like those related to IN10 offences are not permitted.

Others like SP30 are ok, but we’ll take that into consideration as we want all of our drivers to prove they can drive safely.

You can’t have more than 3 points.

Are the vans manual or automatic?

All of the vans have manual gearboxes so you need a full manual licence (with Cat B entitlement) to drive them.

We don’t have any vans with automatic gearboxes. Sorry.

What support will I have while I’m out on the road delivering?

Don’t panic! Although technically you’ll be on your own in the van while you are out delivering you won’t be alone. You can always call us direct in the office or post a message to our Malooba only WhatsApp group chat where all the drivers and the office guys are hanging out.

If you need support finding a location let us know and we’ll help you find it. Had a puncture, no problem, we’ll be out in the support van to change it for you.

Will I get a uniform?

Yup, you sure will. You’ll get some Amazon branded swag that includes, polo-shirts, shorts, trousers, jacket, beanie and even a baseball cap. What’s not to like?

What type of van do you use?

We now have a mix of Amazon Prime branded Mercedes Sprinters and Ford Transits that have been custom fitted with shelving in the back that fits the bags the parcels come in.

They also have a walk-though bulkhead door so you can get from the drivers seat straight to the back without getting out of the van.

Plus the back of the van comes equipped with bright LED lighting so you can always see clearly what you are doing.

Oh, and they are tall enough for you to stand up in easily.

Do I have to create my own route?

Um, no. This is Amazon we’re talking about here. All routes are pre-sequenced and pre-packed in the correct order. You just have to log into the delivery app and load up the van in the right order and everything will be fine.

Will I be working for Amazon?

You won’t strictly be working for Amazon, although you will be delivering parcels on their behalf. You’ll actually be self-employed and have a contract with Malooba to deliver on behalf of Amazon.
