Safety and why it comes before speed

There is a moment every driver knows.

You are running slightly behind.

The road is busier than it should be.

The next stop looks close on the map, but there are roadworks in the way, cars parked on both sides, someone walking a dog, a cyclist coming up behind you, and a customer waiting for their parcel.

Nothing dramatic.

Just a normal day.

But it is in moments like that where a choice has to be made.

Do you rush?

Or do you stay calm and do it properly?

That choice matters.

Because safety is not something that only becomes important when something goes wrong.

Safety matters before anything goes wrong.

That is the whole point.

People often think delivery work is about speed.

How many parcels?

How many stops?

How quickly can the route be completed?

And yes, time matters.

Of course it does.

A delivery route has a rhythm. Customers are waiting. The day needs to move. Nobody is pretending that speed is irrelevant.

But speed without judgement is not professionalism.

It is just risk moving faster.

A good driver understands the difference.

There is a big difference between being efficient and being rushed.

Efficiency is organised.

Rushing is emotional.

Efficiency checks before moving.

Rushing assumes.

Efficiency keeps people safe.

Rushing takes chances.

And the road does not forgive many chances.

That may sound blunt, but it is true.

Every van on the road is sharing space with real people.

Children walking home.

Parents loading cars.

Elderly people crossing slowly.

Cyclists trying to stay visible.

Other drivers having their own busy day.

Customers opening front doors.

Pets running out of gates.

None of these people are thinking about our route, our time, or our next stop.

And they should not have to.

It is our responsibility to remember they are there.

That is why safety comes first.

Not because we are trying to slow anyone down.

Not because we do not care about performance.

But because no parcel is worth someone getting hurt.

No route is worth damaging a vehicle.

No target is worth carrying regret home at the end of the day.

A few seconds can feel important when you are busy.

But a few seconds is never more important than getting everyone home safely.

There is a quiet strength in a driver who can stay calm under pressure.

That kind of driver does not need to prove anything by rushing.

They know when to wait.

They know when to slow down.

They know when a space is too tight.

They know when to park a little further away and walk.

They know when to take an extra look before reversing.

They know when the safest choice is not the quickest choice.

That is not weakness.

That is experience.

Some of the best decisions a driver makes are decisions nobody sees.

The decision not to squeeze through a gap.

The decision not to take a blind corner too quickly.

The decision not to reverse without checking properly.

The decision not to let a frustrating customer or a difficult stop affect the next ten minutes.

The decision to pause, breathe, and reset.

Those moments do not get applause.

But they prevent problems.

And in this job, preventing problems is a big part of doing the job well.

Safety is not just about driving either.

It is how you lift.

How you step out of the van.

How you watch for uneven paths.

How you handle wet weather.

How you keep your mind on the road when the day has already tested your patience.

Because sometimes the biggest danger is not the road.

Sometimes it is distraction.

Frustration.

Tiredness.

The feeling of being in a hurry.

We have all felt it.

That is why safety has to be more than a rule.

It has to become a habit.

A habit of checking.

A habit of slowing down when needed.

A habit of thinking ahead.

A habit of looking after yourself, the vehicle, the customer, and the people around you.

At Malooba, we believe great delivery is not just about getting the parcel there.

It is about how it gets there.

With care.

With awareness.

With respect.

Because every delivery happens in someone’s street, outside someone’s home, in a community we are part of for those few moments.

The way we drive says something about us.

The way we park says something about us.

The way we handle pressure says something about us.

And the way we choose safety, even when nobody is watching, says even more.

Speed might finish a stop quicker.

Safety protects the whole journey.

That is why it comes first.

Always.

Because at the end of the day, the best result is not just a completed route.

It is every driver home safe.

Every customer served properly.

Every vehicle looked after.

Every street treated with respect.

That is the standard worth keeping.

And it starts with one simple choice.

Slow down when you need to.

Think before you move.

Do the job properly.

The parcel matters.

But people matter more.
