9 ways to deliver safely when a dog is present

We deliver to a lot of customers and our drivers come across a fair amount of dogs. Most of them are friendly but it is always important to be cautious when approaching a dog that you don’t know.

Approaching an unknown dog can be a bit tricky, as dogs have different personalities and may react differently to strangers. Here are a few tips that our drivers use to approach an unknown dog safely:

  • Always ask the owner's permission before petting or approaching their dog

  • Let the dog sniff your hand first before petting them

  • Avoid direct eye contact with the dog, as it can be perceived as a challenge

  • Move slowly and calmly, avoid sudden movements

  • Avoid reaching over the dog's head or cornering the dog

  • Offer the dog a closed fist to sniff instead of an open hand

  • If the dog seems uncomfortable or shows signs of aggression, back away slowly and give them space

  • Remember that a dog's behaviour can be influenced by its environment, training, and health

  • Never approach a stray dog

These tips help our drivers every day to approach unknown dogs safely.
